I used to do this thing where I’d buy a new journal, write very enthusiastically for a few days, then set the journal aside until something major happened that I wanted to document. Weeks or months would go by between entries until the journal got filled up, I bought a new one, and the cycle repeated. I started this blog after months of being in lockdown, wrote very enthusiastically for a while, and…well, you see where this is going. In… Read More Read More

It’s a normal Wednesday in Winter. But what is normal? Each year, each season, each day of the week as it comes back again brings about variations that keep me on my toes. Today, for example. A is away on business and I’m playing Homestead Mama on my own. Woke up at 7 (no; got out of bed at 7, Sadie woke me at 6 with her barking), bundled up, and went outside for morning duties. I love having the… Read More Read More

Christmas is always a season of reflection, at least it is for me. It’s an opportunity to look back on the year that’s coming to a close and decide what to take with me into the next one. It’s a time out of time when I settle in, get cozy, make a mess in the kitchen with all my various baking conquests, and tap into my Scandinavian love of winter and all things “hygge.”* This year is no different, especially… Read More Read More

Very many times over the past (many) months, I’ve started drafting blog posts in my head. (Let’s not count how long it’s been since I’ve last written one and just agree that “it’s been a while.”) I’ll get inspired by something that I want to put down into words, and then inevitably…I’ll get distracted. Life happens, errands call, and I lose the thread. It’s similar to the flurry of activity of the summer months on a homestead when the weeding… Read More Read More

Did I ever tell you about the treehouse? In a big way, I can attribute our lifestyle today to the 3 nights I stayed there in the summer of 2020. Lockdown had been going on for a few months and I was desperate to get out of the city- but safely. So I found an Air Bnb treehouse in upstate NY and I hit the road, bringing a cooler of food, a book, and my journal. Sometime I’ll tell you… Read More Read More

And just like that, another year is coming to a close. *(No, that was not a thinly veiled reference to the Sex and The City reboot, though I will admit that my curiosity got the better of me and I watched the first few episodes. Undetermined whether I’ll continue down that particular rabbit hole or binge other shows instead.) As any event or time period ends, I can’t help but be reflective about what’s passed and speculate about what’s ahead…. Read More Read More

Hello, friends. I chose to end my regularly scheduled blog programming in order to give myself some flexibility. I knew that might mean these posts would be fewer and more spread out, and that’s indeed what has happened. It’s not that I’ve run out of things to say (far from it), or the desire to share them, but I found that I was observing less. By waiting until I’m overflowing with the need to articulate what I’ve been mulling over,… Read More Read More

I have a confession to make. It’s already mid-way through the day that I usually post these updates and I’m having to force myself to sit down and churn this one out. It’s one of those absolutely perfect pre-Fall days where the sun is shining but it’s brisk and you get to wear your leather jacket for the first time that year. The leaves are juuuust starting to change color and the weeds aren’t popping up every time you turn… Read More Read More

It’s September and we’re entering into a new season here on the Feuer farm. There’s so much I want to fit in before the frost comes and so little time! Speaking of time, is it just me or has the summer sped by in a blur? Even these last two weeks; so much has happened! So I’m grateful for this chance to sit down and reflect on it all. I’m finding more and more that I appreciate having this digital… Read More Read More

How is it already nearing the end of August? Between the revolving door of guests and the near constant rain, it feels like summer has yet to begin. But before I know it, I’ll be pulling my sweaters out of storage! (Which actually makes me really excited to think about.) So what have we been up to these past two weeks? Quite a bit. Shocking, I know, for such under achievers like we are. I’ve actually been away from home… Read More Read More

*Ok. Magic had nothing to do with it. Nor the miracle of Nature. My husband and I started feeling a little too comfortable with what we had on our plates and decided we were ready for the next element: more ducks! This is a bit of a character quirk for us: we rarely slow down or take it easy. When we’ve gotten cozy with one step (like moving in together or acclimating to a new job), we throw another log… Read More Read More

You may have noticed that the last installment of this blog didn’t post. No, it wasn’t a technological glitch. More like a situational necessity as we dealt with some drama at home. Out of the blue, a little over two weeks ago, our beloved dog, Sadie, got violently ill. We still don’t know what caused it, but she was sick for 4 days and wouldn’t eat and barely drank… it was a nightmare. She’s just 2 1/2 years old and… Read More Read More

And just like that, I’m pulled back in. When I first started writing this blog, it was with the hope that I could examine my relationship with my art- as opposed to my relationship with my career. Because they often felt like two different things. To be honest, this is a question I’ve been chewing on for many, many years. Nothing new. But in moving up here; in finding a new purpose and new ways to express my creativity, I… Read More Read More

I woke up today to the sound of heavy furniture being moved through the house. Turns out it was NOT actually my husband doing some redecorating after all, but a massive rain shower that turned to a thunder storm and then… hail. We’ve had beautiful, mild weather the past week or so, and had decreased our garden watering to every other day. The plants seemed happy (other than the peach tree, which I’ll get to in a moment), and so… Read More Read More

Call me crazy, but I enjoy Mondays. It started during Covid, when I craved the comfort of a simple routine. Mondays are now the start of another week of goals, whether that’s finally getting the plumber to come check out that funky smell outside our kitchen, or to research how to plant potatoes (am I too late?), or to find a family doctor in our new area. Mondays also happen to be when I water all the house plants. Of… Read More Read More

I’m sitting down to write this on a glorious sunny morning; the fifth in a row of its kind. I’m itching to get outside to tame more of the property, but structure is important to me. And while this routine of bi-monthly blog posts was made and could be broken by me, I know that sticking to routine is good for my mental health. I’m sure many of you out there developed your own routines during the pandemic that helped… Read More Read More

If you noticed today’s post is a couple days late, then you’re right! But I have a great excuse, I swear. On Monday (when I was scheduled to share the latest updates with you), I had my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Knowing how the first round had sort of knocked me out, my mother graciously agreed to come “escort” me to the second. It turned out I managed much better than I’d thought, so we spent the afternoon… Read More Read More

(*My husband is definitely rolling his eye while reading that. But what can I say? I’m a sucker for Dad jokes.) Without a doubt, the biggest update I have is that I got my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine! Do any other vaccinated people feel like they experienced a piece of history? Though I guess we’ve all lived through historical times of late. My vaccine appointment was about 90 minutes away through beautiful farm country, so I got to… Read More Read More

You may notice that today’s post is a little late. Yes, I laid out this schedule myself but I like to be consistent. The reason I didn’t have this ready to publish first thing this morning is that I’ve had a hard time sitting still long enough to write. After the year plus of Covid confinement and a very long and grey winter, I have wanted to drink in every new sign of spring and get my hands in the… Read More Read More

Without a doubt, the biggest update I have for you is…we closed on our house! Now, if you’re confused I don’t blame you. Haven’t we uprooted from Brooklyn and left our apartment far behind? Haven’t we been living in this house for 3 months? Haven’t we painted, furnished, and claimed it? Yes, yes, and yes. This was all done with a degree of risk, as we hadn’t actually closed on the house. To tell you the truth, I hadn’t been… Read More Read More
